OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU is a community of scholars committed to academic
excellence, research and morals. Every member of the University staff and students-
makes a commitment to strive for personal and academic integrity; to treat others with
dignity and respect; to honour the rights and property of others; to take responsibility for
individual and group behaviour; and to act as a responsible citizen in a free academic
community and in the larger society. The maintenance of the standards of scholarship,
personal integrity and communal life essential to the existence and good name of the
University must, however, depend mainly on the responsibility accepted by its members for
organizing their academic work, their personal lives and their participation in the University
Community.
As members of this community, students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately,
including their dealings with other students, staff and external organizations, and to comply
with the University rules and regulations. It behoves every student to show respect for
persons and property, to maintain the highest moral and ethical standards and to behave in a
way that does not interfere with normal operations of the University. Where there is reason
to believe that rules and regulations have been broken, and/or when the behaviour of a
student falls below the expected standards, disciplinary procedures would be followed by
authorized disciplinary committees.
This Student Code of Conduct is the University official regulations, sanctions and expected
standards of conduct that are applicable to all students. The purpose of the Code of Conduct
and the articulation of expected standards of student conduct are to further the mission of
the University and to protect the well-being of the community. This Code of Conduct is
meant to ensure order and harmony in the University and make the life and stay of students

effectively for all its community members.
The Vice-Chancellor shall exercise such functions as may be conferred or urged upon
him/her by the Law, Statutes, Ordinance and Regulations of the University and shall,
subject to the provisions to the Law, Statutes, Ordinance and Regulations, exercise general
supervision over discipline in the University (including in particular) the exercise of
disciplinary control over students in such manner as may be deemed appropriate.
1.1 Vision Statement
The Olabisi Onabanjo University shall be the centre of academic excellence where
“knowledge, skills and value will be pursued relentlessly to ensure the flowering of human
abilities, service to the Nigerian nation and the world at large in the wider context of
traditional wisdom and culture”.
1.2 Objects of the Code of Conduct
The objects of the Code of Conduct point towards the utilitarian reformative tradition
through which misconduct and/or offences can be curbed in the University community. The
aim is to help the offender realize the wrongness of his/her action and amend accordingly. If
2
an offender is confined through sanction such as expulsion or suspension from the
University Community for a certain period of time, such recalcitrant will be less likely to
harm others during that period of time. The exposure to rehabilitation, through the advice of
the University Counselling Centre, will show an offender a better way of life. The ultimate
concern here is to prevent and reduce misconduct in the University Community.
The objects of the code of conduct are therefore to
(1) Serve as deterrence to potential offenders;
(2) Curb misconduct and/or infractions through utilitarian reformation;
(3) Incapacitate recalcitrant offenders and;
(4) Engender a reformative tradition whereby the offender will not commit any act of
misconduct and/or infraction(s).
